Borderlands Splitscreen problem?

My friend wants to host a splitscreen game so we can work on his career, but even when we select my save device, my character profile doesn't load. Any ideas why this might be happening? I have the latest update.
I am signed in with my profile, but player 2 doesn't seem to be able to choose a character.

Are you signed in with your profile, and choosing to load your character from the split screen menu?

Edit: Yes, look at the bottom right corner of the screen, that's where Player 2 can choose to Ready Up, or choose to load one of his/her characters.
